  1.   With most of the cable companies
  2. scrambling their signals on most all
  3. new and some old channels I thought I'd
  4. update and revise my first version
  5. (1.0) of Pay Tv Decoder Plans.
  6.   Due to different scrambling systems,
  7. you might find it neccesary to change
  8. the range and values of the variable
  9. capacitator.  I've also added a
  10. wiring diagram to help you with design-
  11. ing the circut.  If you have any
  12. questions just leave a message on the
  13. board listed at the end of the article.

  24. 1   - Radio Shack mini-box ( #270-235)
  25. 1   - 1/4 watt resistor, 2.2k-2.4k ohm
  26.       (RS #271-1325)
  27. 1   - 75pf-100pf variable capacitor
  28.       (Very hard to find)
  29. 2   - F61a chassis-type coaxial
  30.       connectors (RS #278-212)
  31. 12" - No. 12 solid copper wire
  32. 12" - RG59 coaxial cable

  37. 1.  Bare a length of No. 12 gauge solid
  38. copper wire and twist around a 3/8"
  39. nail or rod to form a coil of 9 turns.
  40. Elongate coil to a length of 1 1/2"
  41. inches and form right angle bends on
  42. each end.
  43.  
  44. 2.  Solder the varible capacitor to
  45. the coil. It doesn't matter where you
  46. solder it, it still does the same job.
  47. The best place for it is in the center
  48. with the adjustment screw facing upward
  49.  
  50. Note: When it comes time to place coil
  51. in box, the coil must be insulated from
  52. grounding.  This can be done by crazy-
  53. glueing a piece of rubber to the bottom
  54. of the box, and securing the coil to it.
  55.  
  56. 3.  Tap coil at points 2 1/2 turns from
  57. ends of coil and solder to coaxial
  58. chassis connectors, bringing tap leads
  59. through holes in chassis box.  Use as
  60. little wire as possible.

  62. 4.  Solder resistor to center of coil
  63. and ground other end of resistor to
  64. chassis box, using solder lug and small
  65. screw.

  67. Diagram: Your circut and design should
  68. look something like this:

  84. 5.  Drill a 1/2" diameter hold in mini-
  85. box cover to permit adjustment of the
  86. variable capacitor from the outside.
  87. Inspect the device for defects in
  88. workmanship and place cover on mini-
  89. box.  Tighten securely.

  91. 6.  Place device in line with existing
  92. cable on either side of the coverter
  93. box and connect to television set with
  94. the short piece of RG59 coaxial cable.
  95. Set television set to HBO channel.

  97. 7.  Using a plastic screwdriver (non-
  98. metallic), adjust the varible capacitor
  99. until picture tunes in.  Sit back,
  100. relax, and enjoy!!!
